Manos Del Uruguay was founded in 1968 by a group of women aiming to promote social and economic development in the rural areas of Uruguay.

The aim was to produce handicrafts using traditional methods and to commercialise them for sophisticated markets.

The craftswomen are the owners of Manos Del Uruguay and have set up a non-for-profit organisations for rural women, to allow them to develop their communities without the need to leave their homes.

They are grouped into 17 co-operatives, which spin, dye, knit and produce finished garments for sale throughout the world.

Their Head Office is in Montevideo, from here they undertake design, quality control and the commercialisation of the products.

Uruguay is in South America and is bordered on the north and north east by Brazil and on the west by Argentina. it has a broad coastline along the Atlantic Ocean.

Uruguay is a small country consisting mostly of plains and some low lying hills where sheep and cattle graze. There are over 30 million heads of cattle and sheep and the breeding of these animals is the axis around which the countries economy revolves.

Spinning and Dying are just two of these traditions.

From their beginnings, exporting yarns and garments has been one of their major objectives.
